Twice a year, Oregon State Parks runs Whale Watch Weeks, when trained volunteers stand at viewpoints along the coast to help visitors spot gray whales.

Two big weeks

The winter week falls around the end of December, as gray whales head south to Mexico. The spring week comes in late March, when they head north.

Learning to spot

Volunteers learn to look for the spout, the back and the flukes. They share tips and answer questions about the whales’ long migration.

Where to go

Depoe Bay’s Whale Watching Center, Yaquina Head and Cape Perpetua are among the popular spots on the central coast.
