Perched on the bluff above Nye Beach, the Sylvia Beach Hotel is a favorite of readers. Each room is themed after an author. Its namesake never set foot in Newport, but her story fits the place.
A bookseller in Paris
Sylvia Beach was an American who opened the bookstore Shakespeare and Company in Paris in 1919. It became a gathering place for writers, and in 1922 she published James Joyce’s “Ulysses” when no one else would.
A hotel for readers
The Newport hotel, a historic building restored in the 1980s, carries her name as a tribute to books and writers. Rooms are named for authors such as Agatha Christie and Mark Twain, and there are no TVs.
Part of Nye Beach
The hotel is part of what gives Nye Beach its arts and literary feel, alongside galleries, the Newport Performing Arts Center and the Newport Visual Arts Center.
