The Lincoln City city council heard from a group who would like to have a disk golf course set up in Lincoln City. It was suggested as an interim use at the villages at Cascade Head to utilize the open space areas. There are three courses currently in Lincoln County two in South Beach, one at Wilder and one at South Beach state park and another in Toledo. Timothy Novak with the planning department explained that the idea of disk golf is similar to regular golf only you try to get the disc into a basket in the shortest number of throws. He said “Disc golf is popular and right now north county residents have to drive over 45-minutes to play. There are a lot of people who travel that play disc golf throughout the state.”
There are over 150 disc golf courses throughout Oregon with thousands of members of clubs throughout the state that Tim said could be coming to Lincoln City to play. This would help to increase the recreational diversity of the city. “We can also sponsor tournaments that could be another draw more people to Lincoln City” Tim explained. The course would be maintained by the disc golf club and the boy scouts would also help. The group is asking for 32 acres to utilize putting in the course that might minimize impacts with other users.
The estimated cost for the project would be just over $18,000 and Tim said that could come from fundraising and grants or the council could include funding as part of the next budget cycle for the parks department. He asked the council for their approval and support in moving forward with the project. The council approved for staff to move forward with plans for a disc golf course to come back to the council for final approval.
