During the Port of Newport Board of Commissioners meeting Port General Manager Kevin Greenwood announced that Teevin is interested in working with the port on a lease option for a 9-acre site. The Port may need to look into developing the lay down area that could be leased to Teevin. The cost of developing the site is extensive and would require grants to complete. Greenwood said there has been interest in the port applying for grants such as Connect Oregon to get the work done.
Assuming the grant was received, this would allow a public private partnership that could get the site up and running. Greenwood said there has been a lot of interest from the state in getting the international terminal site up and running with a lay down area. Eric Oien with Teevin said “We are anxious to get the paperwork done so we can work to bring some revenue to the Port of Newport.” He added “there is not only the cargo but other items that we can ship out from the terminal that will bring significant and much needed revenue for the port. There is also the benefit to the local economy with the jobs we would be providing. ”
There was hope that the port would be able to approve documents ready to sign with Teevin Tuesday night during the meeting but it was not ready. Greenwood said the Port’s attorney is currently drafting a lease option document that could be reviewed by the Teevin and the Port with ultimate Port Commission approval. Greenwood said “this is likely going to require a special port meeting.”
