Agate Beach Surfing Event This Weekend

many surfingIt’s been 6 years, but a surf competition is back in Newport, Oregon!  Newport Parks and Recreation is excited to announce the first annual Agate Beach Surf Classic.  On September 24-25, surfers across the Pacific Northwest will compete in a much missed event at Agate Beach in Newport.  This three day event will have surfing divisions for adults and youth.

This contest is the revival of a former contest started by local surf legend and board shaper, Steve Swan.  With the help of Ossies Surf Shop, Ocean Pulse,  and volunteer surfers, the City of Newport is able to breathe new life into this old contest known as The Rogue Gathering.

Attendance is free. Surfers will gather at 8 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday for the first heats and will be competing in 8 divisions: Youth 12 & Under (with or without a parent), Junior Women 13-19, Junior Men 13-19, Women 20-49, Men 20-49, Women 50+, Men 50+ and Stand Up Paddleboard (non-gender).

100% of the contest proceeds will go towards the youth programs scholarship fund at the Newport Recreation Center. This funding allows children from Lincoln County economically disadvantaged households the opportunity to participate in a number of fantastic programs.

Major sponsors of the Agate Beach Surf Classic include the City of Newport Parks and Recreation, Ossies Surf Shop, Rogue Brewery, and Ocean Pulse.  Other contributors include Quicksilver, Roxy, Ocean Equity Real Estate, Murdey Surfboards, Russo Surfboards, Bike Newport, Szabo’s Steakhouse & Seafood, Roby’s Furniture, and Crossfit Newport.

Registration is now open.  Online pre-registration is $40.00 and available until September 25th.  Day-of registration is $50.00, but there is no guarantee of open spaces on the day of the contest.  For more information, check out www.NewportSurfClassic.com, call Mike Cavanaugh at (541) 574-5453 or look for us on Facebook.
