Hunger Action Month

By Kiera Morgan

Nancy Mitchell Director of Food Share of Lincoln County was on hand earlier this month when the county board of commissioners proclaimed September as Hunger Action Month. She explained that they serve roughly 10% of the counties population. Now is a difficult time of year for the food pantries as during the summer months they don’t get the monetary or food donations they do during the holiday season. Nancy added that this time of year full time employment often gets cut back to part time for many families as the cooler weather sets in and businesses cut back. Mitchell added that it isn’t just families who utilize the food pantries but seniors as well.

As seniors retire they see more of their monthly income going toward medical expenses leaving little left over for food. Last year food share of Lincoln County pantries distributed over 1-million pounds of food to those in need in our local area. She thanked the commissioners and those who donate in the local communities for making that distribution of food possible to those in need. Mitchell encourages individuals and businesses to get involved in some way during hunger action month. Food Share supplies food to the six food pantries throughout Lincoln County and to the Produce Plus and senior and youth programs.
