With Oregon’s hottest temperatures and driest conditions occurring throughout the next few days, Oregon State Fire Marshal Jim Walker is urging all residents to take the utmost care and thorough caution to prevent wildfires. Walker stated that a majority of this year’s wildfires have been human caused. This demonstrates that everyone needs to take responsibility for protecting themselves and your neighbors by preventing wildfires in these extreme conditions. The Oregon Department of Forestry has reported that since January 1, 2016, there have been 466 wildfires caused by humans. And due to the extreme temperatures, much of Oregon is under a burn ban.

Currently, Oregon has several active wildfires that have put people and homes at risk, and a number of families have received evacuation warnings. Walker added that the State Fire Marshal’s office is in constant communication with the Oregon Department of Forestry and other wildland partners to assist with firefighting efforts if called upon. A red flag warning is in effect for today. High temperatures and wind will cause dry conditions. This is expected to contribute to extreme fire behavior and any fire starts could spread very rapidly.

A high heat advisory is also in affect for the coastal and inland areas. Temperatures are expected in the upper 90’s to 100 degrees in the valley and east county areas and in the upper 80’s along the coast. It is advised to drink plenty of water wear suncreen if you are out in the sun for an extended time. Remember to not take animals with you in your car unless you have air conditioning and will not be leaving them in the car. Seniors and children should stay in air conditioned rooms. Those planning on enjoying the water in lakes, rivers or the ocean are reminded to be sure to wear a life jacket and be diligent about water safety.
