At approximately 5:48 this morning 8/5)Willamette Valley Communications Center received a report of a fire at the City Center Motel on Hwy 101 in Newport. The motel was reported to be fully engulfed in flames. Fire personnel began to evacuate the motel and suppress the fire. The fire continued to spread and additional resources were dispatched to the scene.
Fire apparatus and personnel from Toledo, Depoe Bay, North Lincoln, Seal Rock, Waldport, and Yachats responded to assist. Four guests were transported to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital; two with minor injuries that were treated and released. One guest was admitted for burns and smoke inhalation, and is being transported to the Legacy Emmanuel Burn Center.
Guests at the Days Inn, south of the City Center Motel were also evacuated as the fire spread to the north part of the Days Inn complex. Temporary shelter has been established at the Newport Armory. Red Cross responded to the scene to assist with displaced guests. The Red Cross is asking for donations of blankets, clothes, shoes and personal care items for those who have been displaced. There are also a few children who have been displaced by the fire.
Highway 101 is now open however there is only one lane open going southbound. It is still advised to use and alternate route. Due to the amount of water being used to suppress the fire, users of Newport water may notice a dirty color to the water. The water is safe to drink. Newport Public Works will monitor the city’s water and will flush water lines as needed. Updates will be provided when additional information is available
