Commemorate the Birth of the American Flag
The Newport Elks Lodge 2105 will host their annual Flag Day ceremony at the lodge located just off of Highway 20 at 45 SE Moore Road. The celebration is on June 14, 2016 and begins at 5:30 p.m. with music, ceremony, food and fire!
Open to the public, family friendly.
Flag presentations by the Coast Guard Color Guard and the Boy Scouts.
Special Invitation is extended to the military, police, fire, all emergency service workers, veterans, and families.
Flag Day has been celebrated by the Elks since the early days of the organization’s founding. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, is a social club of the American fraternal order. In 1907 the BPOE Grand Lodge resolved to designate June 14 as Flag Day. The Grand Lodge of the Order adopted mandatory observance in 1911. The patriotic essence of the organization garnered support from Woodrow Wilson. In 1949, the President of the United States designating June 14 as Flag Day and it became a nationwide practice.
The public is encouraged to participate. The Newport Fire Department will assist with the burning of old and tattered flags to dispose of them properly. Elks Lodge encourages the public to bring tattered flags to the Elks Lodge at 45 SE Moore Road to be properly dispatched on Flag Day.
