Newport Celebrating Summer with a Drum Roll

Saturday Summer Celebration at Café Mundo beginning Saturday May 14.

The free, family friendly community event — described as part street performance, part jam session, part neighborhood block party — is in its sixth year on the outdoor theater stage at Café Mundo in Newport’s oceanfront Nye Beach historic district. It features traditional and indigenous World Beat rhythms and Native American flutes with Thunder & Lightness, Ocean Thunder! Percussion Ensemble, and special musical guests.

Saturday from Noon to 3:00 pm (except for the July show, on the third Saturday) through September. There is ample seating available — some of it covered — in the large Café Mundo Courtyard and food and beverage service is available during the performances

Davis said all ages are welcome and there will be light percussion available to encourage audience participation. “There is also lots of room for dancers, hula hoopers, jugglers, jesters and clowns,” he said. Drummers and other musicians whose material fits into the acoustic World Music format are welcome too, but need to make arrangements in advance by contacting Davis directly at chandler@chandlerdavis.com or541-272-4615

The regularly scheduled Newport Community Drum Circle gatherings at Don Davis Park, across from the Newport Performing Arts Center, are open to all every first and third Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, through September.
