Tonight at 5:30 Family Promise of Lincoln County is holding an informational event at the Center for Health Education building in Newport. There will be a discussion on family homelessness in Lincoln County and ways the community can get involved to help. The event is being hosted by the Oregon Coast Community College Student Nursing Organization. According to Family Promise volunteer coordinator Shiana Weaver they are looking to get additional volunteers and support to help more homeless families in Lincoln County.
Family promise of Lincoln county is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide shelter, meals and comprehensive assistance to homeless and low-income families with children in Lincoln County, while they seek to achieve sustainable independent living. This is achieved through a collaborative community effort and based off a proven successful national model that partners with local congregations and social service agencies to provide practical and effective services.
Clients are able to go to a local participating church for dinner and spend the night and then take the bus back to the community center. There the family can shower and clean up. Children go to school and the family get the help they need through case management. Many of the families that they serve have working parents however they are unable to afford or save up enough to have stable permanent housing. They have an 85% success rate.
