On December 13, 2016, at about 1:40 a.m., Newport Police Officers and emergency personnel responded to motor vehicle crash with injuries at the intersection of S. Coast Highway and S.W. Angle Street. Upon arrival, Officers found a black 2010 Mini Cooper on its top in the middle of the highway. The driver, Gil Francisco Aguilar Garcia, age 24 of Newport, had to be extracted from the vehicle. His passengers had exited the vehicle under their own power. Passengers were treated at the scene by emergency personnel ; one was treated and released from Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport. Garcia was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis, where he was last known to be in fair condition.

The Lincoln County Multi-Agency Crash Team was activated, and responded to the scene. It was determined that Garcia had been traveling eastbound on S.W. 2nd Street at a high rate of speed. He failed to negotiate the turn onto S.W. Angle Street. Garcia then left the roadway, vaulting his vehicle over shrubbery , and knocking over a decorative clock tower. Garcia’s vehicle rolled multiple times, coming to rest on its top in the middle of S. Coast Highway. Garcia was charged with Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants, Reckless Driving, Recklessly Endangering, Assault III, and Criminal Mischief I. His bail amount was set at $425,000.

The Newport Police Department was assisted on scene by the Newport Fire Department, Pacific West Ambulance, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Toledo Police Department, Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office, Oregon Department of Transportation, and Newport Public Works. The roadway was closed for approximately four hours with detours in place. There was minimal impact to traffic through the area.
