Saturday evening at 4:45 p.m., a Newport Police Officer observed 19-year old Riley John Trivett, of South Beach, driving a car in the Nye Beach area. The officer confirmed Trivett did not have valid driving privileges and took enforcement action. Trivett was spotted entering the Newport Performing Arts Center parking lot, where he stopped the car near the Pirate Park.
As additional Newport Police Officers arrived on scene, and approached Trivett’s car from either side they reportedly could see that Trivett was holding drug paraphernalia, and appeared to be in the process of ingesting narcotics. Despite the multiple police vehicles and lights, Trivett had not noticed the Officers until they gave him commands to put down the items.
Trivett then allegedly tried to conceal the items by throwing them towards a passenger, later identified as 23-year old Austin Robert Lancaster, of Siletz. Officers observed Lancaster try to conceal a small plastic baggy under his leg containing a white powdery substance. Trivett and Lancaster were detained while the vehicle was searched. The searched yielded a quantity of drugs, packaging material, digital scales, a large sum of US currency, and drug use paraphernalia. Both Trivett and Lancaster were arrested at the scene and transported to the Lincoln County Jail.
