The Hatfield Marine Science Visitor Center has acquired a new giant Pacific octopus, a female they’ve named Olson. According to HMSC Volunteer Coordinator Renee Fowler, Olson is doing very well and seems to be quite comfortable with all the strange faces staring at her. Fowler said there will be regularly scheduled public feedings with Olson at 1:00pm each Thursday, Saturday, and Monday. Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Visitor Center creates a unique, dynamic environment for lifelong exploration and discovery.
The Visitor Center encourages adults and children to enjoy marine science as they learn more about the natural world. The exhibits, programs and classes demonstrate how scientific research enhances our ability to interpret the natural patterns and forces that shape our world, and equips us to better appreciate, manage and sustain coastal and marine resources. The Visitor Center also provides opportunities for conducting research on devices, methods and concepts for informal science education that will advance the art of life-long public education.
At 11am each day this summer the center will host guided estuary walks. The public is invited to join staff for a guided walk of the Yaquina Estuary trail and learn about its ecology and the plants and animals that thrive there. Summer hours are in effect at the Visitor Center open to the public from 10 am to 5 pm, 7 days a week, through Labor Day, Sept. 6, with new exhibits, daily programming and marine education activities for all ages. Admission is by donation.
