Central Oregon Coast NOW hosts Lincoln City screening of Sundance award-winning documentary TRAPPED
Special screening of TRAPPED to be held at the Bijou Theater, Lincoln City on May 14 at 11 a.m. followed by a discussion of challenges highlighted by the film
On Saturday, May 14, Central Oregon Coast NOW (National Organization for Women) Foundation is providing the community the opportunity to view and discuss the award-winning film Trapped which spotlights the ongoing struggles of abortion clinic workers in Texas, Mississippi, Indiana and elsewhere, fighting against so-called Trap laws (hence the film’s title) to keep the procedure safe and legal in the US.
There will be a discussion immediately follow the film. The screening and discussion will take place on Saturday, May 14 at 11 a.m. at the Bijou Theater, 1624 NE Hwy 101, Lincoln City, Oregon 97367. Suggested donation: $7.
Trapped could hardly be more timely. On March 2 the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments for Whole Woman’s Health v Hellerstedt, the biggest abortion rights challenge in two decades. In June a decision will be made, impacting the safe and legal right to choose for millions of women.
The focus in Trapped is on TRAP laws (targeted regulation of abortion providers), which state legislatures have tailored in their own ways from a legislative template advocated by the influential antiabortion group Americans United for Life. The net result of these bills is that clinics are being forced to close at an increasing rate. Alabama, for example, had six abortion clinics at the time of the film’s making, down from 44.
Trapped premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival where it won the Special Jury Award for Social Impact Filmmaking. The feature length documentary was directed by lawyer turned film-maker Dawn Porter (Gideon’s Army).
