The third annual Oregon Coast Renewable Energy Challenge was held at Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport on April 19, 2016. This year’s competition was twice as large as last year, involving nearly 200 students and 59 wind, solar, or wave energy devices. The energetic teams of students from Waldport, Toledo, Tillamook, Seaside and Warrenton competed to see how much energy or speed their model devices could produce, and each team was interviewed by volunteer engineering judges.
We could not have done this without the help of volunteers and teachers from the Oregon Coast STEM Hub. Nine teachers from all over the coast brought their students to the competition this year. The Oregon Coast STEM Hub would like to extend thanks to the 14 engineering judges who reviewed the team presentations, the event volunteers and partners who helped staff the model testing stations, and Amanda Gladics for giving a presentation to the students in the auditorium.
We further appreciate Senator Arnie Roblan, who took time to attend the competition and engage with the teams. The students benefitted tremendously by talking with the judges and with each other about their projects, and sharing their model devices with the community. Events like this help them and their teachers get excited about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).
