On September 22, 2015 at about 2:20PM, OSP Troopers and emergency personnel responded to the report of a crash involving multiple motorcycles on Highway 101 near milepost 173 (north of Florence).
According to witnesses, three motorcycles were northbound on Hwy 101 in the process of passing two vehicles in a no passing zone when the lead motorcycle abruptly slowed causing all three motorcycles to collide.
One of the motorcycle operators, a 58 year old male, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The two other motorcycle operators (males ages 53 and 51) were transported to a local hospital for minor injuries. All three riders were German citizens and attempts are being made to notify their families. Their names will be released when notification to next of kin has been made.
Highway 101 was closed for approximately two hours in both directions to allow the investigation to be conducted. OSP was assisted by the Oregon Department of Transportation, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, Yachats Fire and Rescue, and Western Lane Ambulance.
