Toledo Man Arrested For Arson

On Tuesday, December 5th, 2017 at approximately 11:50 PM The Toledo Police Department began receiving numerous 911 calls regarding a residential fire at 236 NE 9th Street in the City of Toledo.  The Toledo Fire Department responded and spent several hours battling the fire, the residence was deemed total loss. 

During the post-fire investigation numerous indicators were discovered which led fire personnel to conclude the fire was possibly started under suspicious circumstances.  At this point law enforcement was contacted and began investigation into the cause of the fire.  On 12-07-2017 members of the Lincoln County Major Crime Team and the Lincoln County Fire Investigation Team conducted a search and examination of the residence, eventually concluding that the fire to the residence was the result of arson. 

 On 12-14-2017 the Toledo Police Department conducted a narcotics related search warrant at 277 NE 10th Street, the residence of John “Cliff” Brown.  During the execution of this warrant evidence of the arson was located.  Through the evidence located in the search warrant and additional investigation it was determined Mr. Brown was responsible for setting the fire on 12-05-2017 at 236 NE 9th Street. 

On 01-09-2018 Mr. Brown, who was currently in custody at the Lincoln County Jail for narcotics offenses, was charged with Arson in the 1st degree, Arson in the 2nd degree, Burglary I, Criminal Mischief I, Reckless Burning, Recklessly Endangering, and Tampering with Physical Evidence. 

 The investigation into the arson is ongoing and additional arrests and/or charges are expected.  The Toledo Police Department was assisted in this investigation by the Oregon State Police- Arson Investigation Unit, Oregon State Police-Newport, Newport Police Department, Newport Fire Department, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Toledo Fire Department and the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office.
