OCCC Student Nurse Organization Helps Those In Need

At the close of 2017, the OCCC Student Nurses Organization (SNO) asked the public to help in the group’s annual drive to collect hygiene supplies for those in need, and to chip in to help provide gift cards to local retailers as holiday gifts to foster teens in Lincoln County.  And, wow, did the public ever help!

Thanks to the support of countless Lincoln County residents, OCCC students, faculty and staff, as well as the hard work of the SNO, 154 gift cards were collected for the 77 teenagers living in foster care in the county and over 1,600 pounds of hygiene supplies were collected.

“The director of this year’s gift-card fundraiser was Michelle Watson, a first year nursing student and active member of SNO,” said OCCC Nursing Faculty Lynn Barton. “The activities across our student clubs included email requests of faculty, staff and fellow students, Facebook requests of friends, families and acquaintances as well as two bake sales, a hot chocolate and cookie sale, direct financial donations, and, a presentation to College Council.”

Every fall for the last 9 years, Oregon Coast Community College’s Student Nurses Organization has engaged in community service projects like these.  Conducted at various local businesses, the drives support the county Homeless Education & Literacy Project (HELP) and teens in foster care.
