Heavy Rains Cause Sewer Overflow

Beginning at approximately 10:50 am December 19th the Nye Beach Pump Station located at the Nye Beach Turn Around and the Northside Pump Station located at the corner of NW Nye and NW 3rd Street began overflowing due to excessive rain.  Both pump stations stopped overflowing at approximately 11:30 am. It is estimated a total of 1,850 gallons of wastewater was spilled at the Nye Beach Station and approximately 4,500 gallons of wastewater was spilled at the Northside Station. The heavy rains also caused flooding in areas of Nye Beach and flooded the parking lot and basement of the 60+ center. Signs warning of the recent sewage overflows are posted at Nye Beach and sampling is being conducted to determine when the water is safe for contact.  Contact with water contaminated with bacteria can increase the risk of disease.  The public is asked to avoid contact with these water bodies until further notice.
