On Tuesday, November 14, 2017, at approximately 2:00pm, Tillamook 911 received a call about a friend who was hunting mushrooms, who had wondered off and could not now be found. Bryan Olson advised he and a female friend, Candace Hagen, age 62, had gone into an area off of Salmonberry Road, in the far the northeastern part of Tillamook County, to hunt for mushrooms. He advised they became separated and it appeared she had wondered off and he was now unable to locate her. He said she did have a cellphone with her but was not answering.
The Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue (SAR) Coordinator was notified and at approximately 3:00pm Tillamook County SAR was activated. The search was later assisted by the Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office, Portland SAR, Portland Mountain Rescue, Mountain Wave SAR, the Banks Fire Department and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
At approximately 10:00pm searchers located the female in an abandoned vehicle on Highway 26. She advised she had gotten lost and came out on Highway 26 and located the abandoned vehicle that had a window broken out, allowing her to get out of the deteriorating weather conditions which included heavy rains and gusty winds, by sitting in the vehicle. Hagen was in good physical condition and was reunited with the friend. She later called to thank everyone involved.
