Condo Fire In Gleneden Beach Caused By Lightning

By Kiera Morgan:

At about 5:55 am on September 19th Depoe Bay Fire crews were dispatched to a report of a condo fire in Gleneden Beach. Crews arrived at the Sea Ridge condominiums across from the Thriftway store and noticed heavy fire coming from one of the units. Depoe Bay fire chief Josh Williams noted that the fire crews were able to get the fire out quickly so it did not cause further damage to other units at the condominiums.

There was some water damage however from the fire. He said the cause appears to have been from a lightning strike. Shortly before receiving the fire call residents had called in reporting that they had seen lightning strikes in the area. The condo below the one that was struck was occupied and residents saw embers and evacuated and called 911.

The condo was unoccupied and others in adjoining condos were evacuated so there were no injuries. Firefighters from Newport and Lincoln City were called in to help. Crews cleared the scene around 10:30am and occupants of surrounding units were being allowed back inside.
