Lorna Davis, Newport Chamber Director gave her report on tourism development and activities in the city of Newport. This was to be Davis’ last tourism report to the city council as she has accepted a position with Travel Oregon coordinating travel efforts and promoting Oregon to the European market. Mayor Sandy Roumagoux read a proclamation honoring Davis for her work in promoting Newport over the years. City manager Spencer Nebel and the council thanked Lorna for her work at the Chamber.
During her presentation Davis explained that the destination Newport committee is a group of volunteers that oversees the tourism budget for the city of Newport. The city contacts with the chamber for $172,500 a year to provide marketing services for the city. The chamber provides visitor information through signage at the chamber office along with brochures listing activities and attractions.
Davis reported that over 30,000 people walk through the chamber doors each year. She added that they also manage and maintain local websites and utilize social media and calendar of events. Davis told the council that they work with tourism councils throughout the state to promote Newport.
Davis told the coucil that the Chamber also provides hospitality training like the “Know your Newport” program. She said direct spending has grown considerably from 2010 up from 123-million to 170-million. She said right now as far as visitors coming from Europe the most are coming from the UK and Germany. Davis said the direct flights from Europe to Portland are a big help.
