Just before noon on Friday August 11th Newport Fire Department was dispatched to a garage on fire at a home located on NE 11th Street. Upon arriving, first in fire department units found a detached garage building fully involved and threatened the nearby home. Fire crews kept the fire from spreading to the home. They were able to contain the fire to the garage and bring it under control in approximately 20 minutes. Firefighters spent another hour and a half overhauling to structure to ensure the fire was completely extinguished. Although several people were home at the time the fire broke out, no one was injured, and everyone was able to evacuate the home safely before fire crews arrived.
Newport Fire Department received mutual aid assistance from Toledo, Depoe Bay, and Seal Rock Fire departments. Newport Police Department and Pacific West Ambulance also helped on scene. Newport Fire Department responded with two fire engines, one ladder truck, two chief officers and 14 firefighters. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The garage, valued at $75,000 was a total loss. However, the home, valued at $374,000 was saved with only minor heat damage. One adjacent home also suffered a cracked window from exposure to the heat.
