On July 4, 2017, the Lincoln City Police Department was assigned as the primary law enforcement agency to investigate the death of Stewart Douglas Curry by the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office. Mr. Curry was in the custody at the Lincoln County Jail pending trial on criminal charges at the time of his death.
Detectives involved in the investigation have determined that at around 5:28am on July 4th, 2017, Mr. Curry was found unresponsive in his cell by Corrections Deputies. Mr. Curry was being housed alone in a single cell at the jail. The Lincoln County Jail staff had completed a routine bed check one hour before Mr. Curry was found. Lincoln County Jail Deputies were in the process of conducting morning breakfast service, when Mr. Curry was discovered as unresponsive.
Deputies immediately began CPR procedures and members of the Newport Fire Department and PacWest medics were called to the jail to further provide medical treatment. Paramedics were not able to resuscitate Mr. Curry. Mr. Curry was pronounced deceased by paramedics. Detectives located evidence consistent with that of suicide. There has been no evidence located to indicate foul play in the death of Mr. Curry. On July 5, 2017, an autopsy of Mr. Curry was completed by the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office in Portland. During the autopsy the Medical Examiner reported to detectives that the cause of Curry’s death was asphyxia by hanging. The manner of death was suicide.
On July 4, 2017 at approximately 5:28 am, during routine breakfast service, Lincoln County Jail deputies discovered inmate Stewart Douglas Curry of Toledo, OR unresponsive.
Jail staff began CPR immediately and medics were called. Medics arrived and took over CPR. Subject was pronounced deceased by paramedics. At the time of the incident the subject was housed in a single cell. Jail deputies completed routine inmate welfare checks approximately one hour prior to the incident.
An autopsy to determine cause of death is scheduled to take place on July 5th, 2017.
Subject was lodged in the Lincoln County Jail on the charges of Rape 1 x 2; Sodomy 1 x 3; Sex Abuse 1 x 2 with a total security amount of $1,500,000.00.
Lincoln City Police Department is handling the death investigation.
