Science teachers are invited to the Oregon Coast Aquarium on August 5 to learn about the unique species that call our rocky shores home. The free, all-day interactive workshop will give participants an understanding and appreciation for these amazing coastal creatures, and allow teachers to practice implementing that knowledge in their classrooms, said Sara Shaw Roberts, School Liaison for the Oregon Coast Aquarium. The workshop is geared toward teachers of grades 3-5, but the material is adaptable to both younger and older students.
Participants will learn about the biology, ecology, current issues and human dimensions of tidepool ecosystems. They’ll also explore local field sites with naturalists, practice student activities and facilitation techniques with education experts, and receive the Aquarium’s Teacher’s Guide to Exploring Oregon’s Rocky Shores.
“Teachers will get an in-depth look at rocky intertidal ecology in the Aquarium’s galleries, but the workshop doesn’t just focus on our exhibits,” said Roberts. “Half of the day will be spent with intertidal experts from the Aquarium and Oregon State Parks on local beaches, where teachers can experience the rocky-shore environment much as their students would on a field trip.”
During the workshop, instructors will share lesson plans, activity demonstrations, and field trip management techniques that teachers can later use with their students. “Ultimately, the goal of the workshop is to have each teacher come away feeling prepared and inspired to take their students on a rocky-shores field trip of their own,” Roberts said. This workshop is free for licensed Oregon teachers. To learn more about the workshop and register, go here.
