Thanks to a grant from Oregon State University’s Women’s Giving Circle and additional funding from the Oregon Coast STEM Hub, 7th and 8th grade girls will have the opportunity to attend Girls in Engineering and Marine Science (GEMS), a unique Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) camp in Newport. This free two-day camp will be led by female faculty and graduate students from Oregon State University and will take place on March 10th and 11th at Hatfield Marine Science Center.
Participants will develop teamwork, communication, and leadership skills throughout the program and learn from mentors about what it is like to pursue a degree and career in engineering and marine related fields. The girls will also engage in a variety of hands-on activities, get behind-the-scenes tours, and spend the night in the shark tunnel at the Oregon Coast Aquarium where they will learn about additional career opportunities.
GEMS begins at 9 am on Friday, March 10th and ends at 4 pm Saturday, March 11th. Only 7th and 8th grade girls who are Oregon Coast residents are eligible to participate. Meals are included both days.
Space is limited and pre-registration is required. To take advantage of this opportunity, parents/guardians should register participants at http://tinyurl.com/GEMSMar2017 by March 3rd.
