On June 24, 2016 at about 2:00 PM a mail carrier reported finding a possible pipe bomb sitting between mailboxes in the 400 block of Drift Creek Road just south of Lincoln City. Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded and, with the assistance of ODOT, blocked off the roadway until the Oregon State Police Explosives Unit was able to respond.
The OSP Explosives Unit arrived within a few hours and was able to utilize robotic technology to safely obtain and analyze the device within 15 minutes and determined the device was not an explosive device, but rather an old flashlight. The flashlight was disposed of and the roadway was opened and the area released at 4:50 PM. On scene deputies reported that motorists and local residents were very understanding of the temporary closure and supported the approach of; “Better safe than sorry.”
