Oregon State Fire Marshal Jim Walker presented Capt. Jim Kusz with North Lincoln Fire and Rescue with the Golden Sparky award last Wednesday during a special award ceremony in Newport.
The Golden Sparky recognizes a fire service member for outstanding achievement in fire prevention or public fire safety education. Capt Kusz was nominated by Stephanie Stafford the fire prevention coordinator and fire and life safety education officer for the state.
In the nomination Stafford stated that “Jim is very passionate in his role of preventing fires. He has worked to develop programs to help teach fire safety to young and old and works with the teen CERT program in Lincoln City and works with the school district to help deliver the fire safety message.
She added that in addition to his fire prevention work Jim also plays a vital role in fostering coastal safety and awareness campaigns. He developed and created the curriculum for the SET Severe Event Training and JAWS Just Add Water Safety educational programs.
In the nomination form Stafford said “Jim noted that his biggest achievement to date is creating the new Oregon Coast Community College Adult Education program called “Disaster Preparedness For the Pacific Northwest”. On top of all of this Jim is also a front line officer, entry firefighter and responds to EMS calls.” Jim has been on staff with North Lincoln Fire for 13-years.
The “Silver Sparky” is awarded to civilians making a different in prevention education, this year’s ‘Silver Sparky went to the American Red Cross Oregon.
