On February, 2016, at 9:20 a.m., Newport Police Officers were dispatched to a single-vehicle crash in the area of SE Fogarty Street and SE 2nd Street in Newport. Officers conducted a crash investigation, which resulted in the arrest of one driver, Kyle James Edwards, age 26 of Toledo. During the investigation at the scene it was learned that Edwards was driving his 1999 BMW at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his vehicle. Witnesses observed Edwards’ vehicle driving at “about 80 mph” as it ascended SE Fogarty Street.
At the top, witnesses stated Edward’s vehicle launched into the air with all four tires off the roadway for approximately 57 feet. Edwards lost control as his vehicle landed and began sliding. His vehicle slid more 250 feet, crashing through a neighbor’s wooden fence, and then over the top of a city street sign. Edwards’ vehicle slide across SE 1st Street, coming to rest in a nearby parking lot. Edwards was taken into custody at the scene and transported to the Lincoln County Jail. He was charged with Reckless Driving, and Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree; he also received citations for driving offenses. His bail was set at $150,000.
