California Man Dies In Crash On Hwy 101 In Yachats

On December 26, 2015, at about 11:45 a.m., Oregon State Police (OSP) Troopers and emergency personnel responded to the report of a motor vehicle crash on US Highway 101 at milepost 162 in Yachats. Preliminary information indicates that Allan Richard SCHMIDT, age 94, from Fortuna, California, was operating a white 2006 Chevrolet Colorado pickup and traveling southbound on US Highway 101 near milepost 162. For unknown reasons, the Colorado veered off the roadway into a ditch adjacent to the southbound shoulder and struck a utility pole.

The Colorado then crossed over a private driveway and came to rest in thick brush west of the highway. SCHMIDT was pronounced deceased at the scene. Air bags were deployed and SCHMIDT was not wearing a safety belt. Oregon State Police is currently investigating the crash and was assisted by Yachats Fire and Rescue, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office, Lincoln County Medical Examiner, and Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT).
