Friday morning (7/10) at 1:30am Coast Guard Sector North Bend received a mayday call from the captain of the 32-foot fishing vessel Sea Pup that he had run aground on the North Jetty of Yaquina Bay. A 47-foot Motor Life Boat from Station Yaquina Bay was dispatched along with a Dolphin Helicopter from Air Station Newport. Upon arrival the Captain of the vessel was able to get off the boat and was on the tip of the rocks on the jetty. A Coast Guard Swimmer from the Dolphin helicopter was lowered to the rocks to assist the captain down the jetty to awaiting emergency personnel. He reported no injuries and was in good condition. The boat has broken up upon the rocks and there was a lot of debris in the water. 80-gallons of diesel fuel was reported to have been released. Chief Petty Officer Bradley Bennett, a marine science technician with the Incident Management Division at Sector Columbia River said investigators are conducting and investigation into the incident. Investigations he said are used to gain and understanding of an incident, and could result in enforcement actions.
